 ABOUT WOODBRIDGE HISTORIC DISTRICT

Woodbridge is noted not only for the architectural excellence of its buildings, but also as a historical benchmark for the growth of Detroit. The importance of the neighborhood is underscored by the fact that ambitious redevelopment projects in recent decades have eradicated so much of Detroit's historic residential fabric, while Woodbridge and Woodbridge Farm stand out as rare survivors of its period in their portion of the city.

Foundation and Early History

The neighborhood's namesake is William Woodbridge, territorial governor of Michigan in the 1880's, who owned the largest farm in the area. The area was slowly built up with modest cottages, most of which were constructed after 1870. Grander structures later followed exemplified by James Scripps' spacious home built in 1879. The Eighth Precinct Police Station (1901) was lavishly designed to blend in with the newer upper-class residences. However, the booming automotive industry increased demand for housing, encouraging the construction of new buildings and apartment houses behind and between the existing houses in the neighborhood. During World War II, a patriotic campaign encouraged owners in Woodbridge to rent rooms or create apartments to house defense industry workers. This campaign resulted in a dramatic increase in population density.

Postwar Decay and Modern Renewal

After the war, a boom in suburban construction made new homes on the fringes of the city inexpensive and some residents left Woodbridge. The influx of new citizens were less affluent, and the economic standing of the neighborhood began to decline. The deterioration of Woodbridge accelerated in the 1960's as adjacent areas became blighted and were marked for clearance by Urban Renewal authorities. The residents organized a Citizen's District Council and succeeded in preserving the neighborhood. The perseverance of Woodbridge residents has successfully managed to preserve many of its remaining homes and shifted its image to that of an up-and-coming area.
